The Scarab and Liya, part 1

This enameled gold cocktail ring is symbolic and unique in many ways. First of all because its ring adorned with palmettes features an enameled scarab. Secondly, because it was made in Egypt. Finally, because its history is linked to an exciting period in the city of Cairo.

At the beginning of the fifties, the Egyptian capital was shining brightly. Buildings and large hotels as well as cinemas and theatres were reinventing it. Cosmopolitan, Cairo shone as the centre of the Arabic world.

Liya had always been passionate about music. After being trained in Syrian-Lebanese singing, she also trained in classical singing. She could rely on the range of her voice, which allowed her to easily switch from one style to another, Arab or Western.

Driven by the cultural effervescence of the city, she was eager to seize the opportunities offered by the new entertainment industry in Cairo. Liya was thus part of the cast of plays sung and performed in several cabarets with audacious and varied program. However, the texts of the others were less and less sufficient for her.

Through singing, Liya wanted to start a new life. In order to fully express her inner transformation and let her most beautiful light shine through, she now had to write her own words and then interpret them.
