FAQ
BUY AN ANTIQUE JEWEL
- What is an antique jewel?
We sell mainly antique jewellery dating from the beginning of the 19th century to the Art Deco period, including Art Nouveau, Victorian, and Belle Epoque jewellery. We select them with care, love, and requirement, and make them restore or transform if necessary.
Note that we speak of Vintage for jewelry less than 50 years old.
- Why buy an antique jewel?
An antique jewel is by definition unique, by its rarity, it becomes precious, beyond its own value.
Far from belonging to those jewels that we buy and then forget almost immediately, these treasures take on an ethical dimension by extending their life when they enter yours.
The pieces that Galerie Pénélope unearths for you are precious objects, full of stories and emotions, that will accompany you throughout your life, and perhaps in others...
- The authenticity of Galerie Pénélope's antique jewellery ?
All our items are guaranteed authentic, appraised and chosen for you by Camille, our gemmologist, graduate of the GIA (Graduate Gemologist), the HRD (Diamond Grader) and the ING (State Certified Gemmologist).
- What kind of antique jewellery do we sell?
Galerie Pénélope offers you a large choice of antique jewellery:
- Are the jewels of the Penelope Gallery guaranteed?
All our jewellery jewellery is guaranteed for a period of one year from the date on your invoice. We will repair free of charge any manufacturing or other defect provided that the defect is not related to the customer's use of the item or to natural wear and tear.
- Can I try on a piece of jewellery before I buy it?
Galerie Pénélope offers a home fitting service to its customers living in Paris or its suburbs. For more information, go to the contact us section.
MAINTENANCE
- How to properly store your jewelry?
In order to preserve their beauty, antique jewellery requires a minimum of order in its storage. The good news is that we are here to advise you!
Your necklaces and bracelets :
Who hasn't seen their chains get tangled up, and despaired of separating them? To avoid this, and the risk of breakage, we have three tips: store them separately, close them, and why not even hang them.
Your earrings :
The risk here is to lose one of them, and there ô despair to find yourself with an orphan earring. It is of course fashionable to have only one earring and to mix the pairs but it is not the goal here ;). We therefore suggest you once again hang them up, and regularly check the functioning of their fastening system.
N.B.: be careful with scarves in winter!
Your rings :
We advise you to separate them, not to put them all in the same bowl, so that they do not clash with each other.
For your travels, Galerie Pénélope suggests investing in a velvet case, also called a "marmot", which allows for safe transportation thanks to storage compartments that will not damage your precious jewellery.
- How do I clean my antique jewelry?
Your jewellery are, because of the materials and the stones which compose them, precious and delicate objects...
By taking a few precautions in use and maintenance, you will be able to preserve their original beauty over time:
Your jewellery need to be cleaned regularly. To clean, use a very soft brush and soapy water, then rinse the piece with clean, warm water.
Be sure to remove your jewelry before going to sleep, physical activity, or using corrosive substances. Avoid contact with perfume, alcohol, cosmetics, ammonia, chlorine,...
- How to repair my antique jewellery?
If your jewel undergoes a shock or a blow, the setting of the stones may need to be controlled. In case of doubt, avoid wearing your jewel until it has been examined by a jeweller.
You can also see for yourself by shaking your jewellery slightly near your ear, if you hear a small noise you should indeed take your jewellery to a professional. This also applies if your jewellery keeps getting caught on your clothes.
- How do I take care of my pearls?
There are many types of fine and cultured pearls (Akoya, Tahitian, freshwater or South Sea, etc.). They are certainly less common than precious and fine stones, but just as fragile: you need to know how to take care of them. Galerie Pénélope explains here how to take care of your pearls, whatever they are.
The beads do not appreciate being forgotten in a jewellery box, they can lose their shine. Do not hesitate to wear them regularly in order to preserve their natural beauty as long as possible.
Indeed, they like the contact of the skin, but attention, not that of the alcohol present in the perfumes, nor that of the cosmetics. As for water, it is better to avoid getting your pearls wet (avoid showering, bathing, or even swimming with them). To pamper them, simply rub them gently with a soft damp cloth.
