Very rare antique Victorian 18kt yellow gold (hallmark: horse's head) ring set with an oval cut amethyst engraved with a flower intaglio orned in its center with rose cut diamonds on a silver setting.

French Victorian work from the late 19th Century.

Gross weight: 3.70g
Finger turn: 58 (diameter 18.40 / US 8.25).

State : worn of the set, very light oxidation and missing parts on the gold and silver parts, visible on the pictures.

Intaglio (n.f.): a hard or thin stone engraved in a hollow.

Here it is a beautiful amethyst that is engraved. By the way, did you know that the name of this fine stone comes from Greek mythology?

Indeed, Amethystos was a nymph that Dionysus, god of wine and festivities, is said to have tried to seduce on several occasions despite her refusal. The goddess Artemis then transformed the nymph into a cold and impenetrable rock crystal to protect her. In anger and love, Dionysus spilled his glass of wine on the crystal, which naturally took on its colour: a deeply intense and mysterious violet hue.
