Did you know that lapis lazuli takes its name from a double origin: Latin (lapis means stone) and Arabic (azul means blue)? And even more surprising, did you know that it is not a mineral like most of the other gems used in jewellery but a rock, in other words an assembly of different minerals such as lazurite, calcite, sodalite, and pyrite?

With its unique and intense ultramarine blue with golden flakes (which are in fact pyrite inclusions), lapis lazuli has been used by man for thousands of years. Of great value, it adorned the sacred objects of ceremonies, was worn as amulets, but was also used as pigments for painting: we still find some today on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel!
